The red-and-white candy canes, which are tall enough for people to walk under and not edible, were installed in early November, before crews started installing decorative lights in the park in preparation for the holidays.

Kalamazoo’s beloved Candy Cane Lane have been a fixture of the holiday season at Bronson Park for decades. In 2019, crews installed an updated candy cane display that drew criticism from those in the community unhappy with the change.

The vintage candy canes could be installed sometime next week, Parks and Recreation Director Patrick McVerry said on Thursday, Nov. 10.

City officials met and talked about the issue in 2019, and decided to bring back some of the vintage candy canes, to display along with the more modern, taller candy canes.

The vintage candy canes are placed on a display rack to allow them to be safely displayed and in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act. The rest of the vintage candy canes displayed at the park in prior years were sold in an auction.

The city’s forestry department is hanging decorative lights in the trees, McVerry said. The lights will not be turned on until the city’s Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 25.
