2022 Ather 450X & 450 Plus: Review In Images - ZigWheels

Ather launched the updated version of the 450X soon after Simple Energy introduced its first-ever electric scooter, the ‘ One ’ into the Indian market. Coincidence or a well-thought-out strategy? Either way, the third generation of the most popular premium e-scooter in India, the  Ather 450X , has a lot going for it. We've decoded the updates via detailed images to help you get a better grip on what's new.

There isn’t a whole lot going on in terms of design. It's the exact same scooter, which isn't particularly bad because the Ather 450X still looks chic in 2022.

The only update so to speak are the redesigned rear view mirrors that are 20 percent lighter as well.

The all-new steams are lighter while the wider mirrors offer better viewing angles, a whole 2 lanes extra, as Ather puts it. In our opinion, it does offer better rear view vision as it doesn't catch much of the rider's shoulders but more of the traffic behind instead.

Getting down to the more important bits. The Gen-3 Ather comes with better range thanks to a larger (25% bigger) battery pack. This pushes the true range of the scooter from 85km to 105km in Eco and from 70km to 85 in Ride mode. We managed to extract 80km while toggling between Warp, Sport and Smart Eco.

A bigger battery means better thermal efficiency, which means you can enjoy performance modes like Warp or Sport much longer. On the downside, the  Gen-3 Ather is a whole 3.6kg heavier than its predecessor.

Although it's larger, the battery’s heft isn’t evident while riding.

The powertrain is the same 6.2kW motor which dishes out an addictive 26Nm of peak torque. That's good enough to offer a claimed 0-40kmph time of 3.3 seconds. It continues to be as engaging to ride as it was before.

The handling of the Gen-3 Ather has also seen an improvement thanks to the fresh MRF rubber. They are grippier than before, thanks to a revised compound. Also, the rear finally gets a fatter 100/80-section tyre as opposed to the previous 90/90.

The rounded profile of the tyres means the scooter leans into corners more progressively. It isn't as unnerving as before, which is good news for novice riders. The added confidence from the tyres will allow you to carry a lot more corner speed.

The grippier tyres also directly influence stopping power – it reduces the squealing under hard braking. But the hardware is the same, so it still locks up under hard braking.

Apart from newer tyres, Ather also offers the Gen-3 Ather with TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) as an optional extra. You see accurate tyre pressures help extract better range.

It’s theft-proof as well since they are installed within the tyres. Live readings on the dash keep you posted on the air pressure your scooter’s running. It retails at Rs 4,999 (including GST).

Last but not the least is the updated hardware underneath the Ather 450s 7-inch TFT screen. The RAM is up from 1GB to 2GB and the ROM from 8GB to 16GB. This improves the computing power making the UI smoother and more intuitive. The added firepower allows the scooter to collect additional riding data, which in turn helps roll out future OTA updates. More memory means more room for additional features to be added in the future as well.

At Rs 1,57,507 for the 450X and the 450 Plus at 1,35,996 (ex-showroom India excluding state subsidy), the hike in prices isn't much. But we would have loved to see new colours on the Gen-3 Ather 450X. Perhaps more performance would have hit the nail on the head. While the Gen-3 Ather 450x is still a sweet deal for new buyers, it isn't too tempting an upgrade for existing Ather owners.
