Hyundai has finally taken the wraps off the much-awaited next-generation Tucson for India and the flagship SUV surely looks promising. Slated to go on sale on the 4th of August, the new Tucson will fill up the ₹25 lakh to ₹35 lakh premium monocoque SUV segment which doesn’t really see a lot of action. Could the Tucson make this segment more exciting and trump its competition? Let’s find out!

The Tucson in India will be sold in the long wheelbase format for added space. Thanks to its longest-in-class wheelbase, the Tucson is the longest in terms of length too. The Citroen C5 Aircross on the other hand is the widest and tallest in the segment. The Jeep Compass is clearly a size small when compared to the rest of the competition and the Volkswagen Tiguan falls somewhere in the middle.

The Tucson and Compass are the only cars in the segment that offer both petrol and diesel engine options. The Citroen C5 Aircross and Volkswagen Tiguan on the other hand are exclusively offered in diesel and petrol respectively. Talking about the petrol engine in the Tucson, it is the least powerful in its segment and also the only naturally aspirated unit as well. It is closely followed by the 1.4-litre turbo petrol of the Compass which is then followed by the Volkswagen Tiguan which is the most powerful in its class. Talking about the diesel engine options, the Tucson is the most powerful in the class. It is closely followed by the C5 Aircross and the Compass in terms of power and torque figures. The Tucson offers AWD with terrain modes exclusively in the diesel variant whereas the Tiguan is the only petrol SUV to offer AWD. The Jeep Compass comes with 4×4 and it is the most capable off the road especially when we consider the Trailhawk model.

All the SUVs offer front and rear disc brakes, ABS, EBD, ESC, HLA, Hill Descent Control, 6 airbags and ISOFIX child mounts. However, the Tucson one-ups the competition by offering a host of driver assistance features. Features like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Blind-Spot View Monitor, Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Surround View Monitor, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (RPCA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) Advanced Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go and Safe Exit Warning (SEW) are a few of the 19 ADAS features offered by the Tucson.

The Hyundai Tucson is probably the most feature-rich car in its segment. It comes with LED lighting all around, heated and ventilated leather electric seats with memory function for the driver, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, 8 speaker Bose sound system, dual-zone A/C with touch-sensitive buttons, Hyundai Bluelink connected car technology, a button for rear seat passenger to control the front passenger seat, 64 colour ambient lighting, 360-degree camera with blind view monitor, Multi air function, cruise control, wireless phone charging, air purifier, panoramic sunroof, electric boot, rain-sensing wipers, electronic parking brake and selectable drive modes.

The Citroen C5 Aircross comes with features like an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Phone Mirroring compatibility, leather seats, panoramic sunroof, an acoustic windscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, engine start/stop button, reclining modular rear seats, Grip Control System, Blind Spot Monitoring, Park Assist, foot-operated electric tailgate, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, dual-tone 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and a multi-functional steering wheel with mounted controls.

The Jeep comes is pretty well loaded too and it comes with features such as a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto, up to five custom profiles, and OTA updates. It also gets other additional bits such as wireless charging, a 360-degree remote camera, Alpine sound system, 10.25-inch digital cluster, connected car technology, auto-dimming IRVM, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, powered liftgate, and powered front seats with ventilation and memory settings.

The Volkswagen Tiguan comes with features such as matrix LED lights, a Virtual cockpit, 30-colour ambient lighting, touch-based tri-zone climate control buttons, heated seats, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, 8-inch touchscreen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, terrain modes, automatic lights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming IRVM and connected car technology.

Though prices for the new Tucson are not revealed yet, it surely does a lot of things right on paper. It comes loaded with features, it offers a ton of level 2 ADAS features, it has the most powerful diesel engine in its class and might as well be the most spacious in its class thanks to that long wheelbase. With all of these strengths mentioned above, the new Tucson could very well be the premium SUV that you can buy today.
