According to insider sources, Samsung is planning to move around 300 workers from its now-closed TV LCD panel manufacturing division to its semiconductor manufacturing unit. This plan comes amidst one of Samsung Electronics‘ display units that stopped producing LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels for TVs.

Sources quote the reason as being falling prices and steep competition from Chinese LCD panel makers. Moreover, Samsung Display has also scaled down its TV LCD business since mid-2010 and also announced that it will gradually end the business to shift over to more profitable ventures such as developing OLED panels.

In August and December of 2020, Samsung did something similar and moved close to 200 to 400 workers to Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions (DS) division which makes application processors and camera sensors. It seems right as the semiconductor industry is already seeing a scarcity of workers as chip demand across the world is at an all-time high.

Samsung Display will gradually increase the production of QD-OLED panels going forward. This new technology has already defeated LG’s OLED panel in terms of image quality, and the Samsung S95B, which was launched a few weeks ago, is being hailed as the best TV in terms of image quality.
